Letters and biographical sketch, 1846-1848.

Two letters, 1846-1848, from Lewis, and a biographical sketch of him. The letters include: Lewis to Pres. James K. Polk, 1846 Apr. 22, about a naval appointment; and Lewis to William Lowndes Yancey, 1848 June 29, regarding their friendship and political policy toward states rights, the Democratic Party and the Baltimore Platform, slavery, the admission of Calif., and other issues. Pages 14 and 15 of the 1848 June 29 letter were not copied or are missing. The biographical sketch, 23 pp., probably was created 1846-1848, while Hall was in the U.S. Senate. It is a celebratory one, perhaps delivered as a speech.

His life and career were marked by a relentless pursuit of his goals instead of the dramatic aura that perpetually surrounded Jackson. The effect...
