The records document Consumers' Research's testing and research of dry cell or flashlight batteries, storage batteries, battery chargers, and battery additives for automobile batteries including AD-X2. Included are correspondence, battery packages, project materials, testing materials, press releases, newsclippings, copies of court documents, congressional reports, and manuscripts of F.J. Schlink's testimony and editorials. Subjects included are Consumers' Research's campaign against the additive AD-X2 and its producer Jess M. Ritchie of Pioneers, Inc., the United States Senate Select Committee on Small Business investigations (hearings and transcripts), the controversial dismissal and subsequent rehiring of Bureau of Standards head, Alan V. Astin, by President Eisenhower's Secretary of Commerce, Sinclair Weeks (1953), the involvement of the Better Business Bureau, reports and correspondence with the Bureau of Standards, a report of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Jeffries Committee of the National Academy of Sciences, and the lawsuit brought against Consumers' Research by Pioneer, Inc. Other subjects included are battery hazards, dry cell batteries, dry cell battery maintenance, storage battery projects, battery chargers, alkaline accumulators, regeneration of storage batteries, and brands of battery additives other than AD-X2.
