Barbara Deming, author and activist, was born on July 23, 1917, in New York City, the daughter of admiralty lawyer Harold S. Deming (1883-1954) and former singer Katherine (Burritt) Deming (1891-?). The second of four children, Deming had three brothers: MacDonald, Quentin (Chip), and Angus (Bim). She grew up in New York City and on South Mountain Road in New City, N.Y., west of the Hudson River.
