Collection consists of Burns' commonplace books containing journal entries, correspondence, photographs, clippings, financial records, invitations, etc. Many of the letters and journal entries deal with children and other family matters. Later commonplace books will be added.

Author and editor Joan Simpson Burns worked at Partisan Review, Readers' Subscription Book Club, CBS/Columbia Records and Harcourt Brace in New York City. She is the author of The Awkward Embrace: The Creative Artist and the Institution in America (1975) and editor of The Dechronization of Sam Magruder, a novel by her father George Gaylord Simpson (1996).
