Joseph Embree and family papers, 1826-1884.

Letters and statements of accounts submitted by the various cotton brokers with whom Joseph Embree dealt comprise the bulk of the papers. Early items pertain to Embree's father-in-law, Benjamin Rawlins, and include land deeds, receipts, and documents relating to the settlement of Rawlins' estate. Embree's papers consist of, among other things, land deeds; contracts and agreements with Jonathan Embree, members of the Rawlins and Lanehart families, and various freedmen; receipts for taxes, tuition (Clinton Female Seminary), and medical services; slave bills of sale; bills for merchandise; and a report by the Wilkinson County (Miss.) Board of Trustees for Township 2 Range 1 West listing subjects taught, number of schools, amount paid teachers, and more. The volume contains information regarding William Heatherington's account with Embree for the years 1853, 1859, and 1860. Postbellum family letters to Mrs. Joseph Embree and Mrs. Lizzie Wall and a few of Ira B. Wall's business papers are also included, as are printed advertisements, a printed list of the 1879 Democratic state ticket, and an undated manuscript concerning the United States Constitution.
