Letters of General William T. Sherman to Colonel Judson David Bingham, Charles Thompson Jones, and Mrs. Mathew Hale Carpenter relate to his command of the Department of the Tennessee, his public appearances and social activities following his retirement from the army, and his plans to publish his memoirs. Three letters to John Eaton Tourtellotte discuss his final tour of duty in the Northwest (Fort Coeur d'Alene, Idaho), a proposed overland journey to Vancouver, the final illness and interment of Ulysses S. Grant, and the disappearance of Governor Thomas Clement Fletcher of Missouri.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. He left his widow, Mary Hoyt Sherman, with eleven children and no inheritance.
