Military correspondence, 1862-1863.

These letters document the military affairs of the Commonwealth and Governor James F. Robinson's role as commander-in-chief. Included are communications from throughout Kentucky concerning guerilla activities and the need for protection; reports of troop movements and encounters between Union and Confederate forces, especially during the Confederate advance into central Kentucky in October 1862, and including an account of the Battle of Perryville; and a letter from a Kentuckian arrested by federal military authorities and imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, protesting his innocence and requesting due process of law.

Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year.
