Gamma Delta Epsilon, which was organized at Dartmouth College in 1907, gained affiliation with a national fraternity in 1928 and became Kappa Chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma. In 1935 it relinquished its national affiliation and changed its name to Gamma Delta Chi, in honor of Gamma Delta Epsilon and another early Dartmouth fraternity, Alpha Chi Rho. The celebration of the 150th anniversary of the decision of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dartmouth College Case was held on April 9, 1969, in the Court of Claims, Washington, D.C.; the celebration also commemorated the career of Daniel Webster, the advocate who defended the case before the Supreme Court.
