Gustavus Otto letters, 1849.

Two letters (photocopies of typed copies) from a soldier in the U.S. Sixth Infantry stationed at Fort Snelling. The first letter (April 7, 1849) includes descriptions of fellow soldiers, rations, and conditions at the fort and at St. Peter's (Mendota) and St. Paul. The second letter (August 18, 1849), written from Galena, Illinois, gives information on the hard winter conditions at Fort Snelling, the circumstances which led him to desert, and his work following desertion.
