Samuel Stambaugh letters, 1835-1841.

Two letters associated with Samuel C. Stambaugh. In one letter (1835) Stambaugh writes from Fort Snelling (Minn.) to his wife, A. S., describing his troops' 16-day march from Prairie du Chien (Wis.) being delayed by a blizzard near Red Wing (Minn.). A forwarding note by A. S. includes details on her stay with the family of French trader Joe Rolette. In the second letter (1841) Henry H. Sibley writes to Colonel Stambaugh regarding the sale of Pike's Island and Jean-Baptiste Faribault.

Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, fur trader. In 1804 Rolette arrived in Prairie du Chien, where until 1821 he was associated with several fur trading companies. An agent of the American Fur Company from 1821 to 1834, Rolette and his partners Hercules Dousman and H.H. Sibley in 1834 became stockholders in Ramsay Crooks' reorganized American Fur Company and contracted to run its Western Outfit.
