Rufus W. Payne letters received, 1858-1859.

Three letters written from Minnesota relatives to Payne and his wife Carrie, who lived in northern Ohio. The first (August 8, 1858), written by a cousin, E. P. Ryder, Duluth, congratulates Payne on his marriage, describes daily life in Duluth and on the family's nearby farm, and discusses the locations of various family members. The other two letters (December 12, 1858; April 10, 1859) are from Payne's brother-in-law, Levi O. Leonard, detailing life in Iosco Township, Waseca County, Minnesota, especially the hardships of frontier life, winter weather, lack of carpentry work, his wife Ellen's homesickness, fishing, and his appointment as township clerk.
