Herbert Clark Hoover (b. August 10, 1874, Iowa-d. October 20, 1964), thirty-first president of the United States, was born in Iowa, and was orphaned as a child. "Ding" Darling (1876-1962) spent the majority of his career working as an editorial cartoonist for the Des Moines Register.
