Phillipps family photographs, ca. 1850-1868.

The collection consists of 66 images that represent Sir Thomas Phillipps, members of his family and a few family friends. Among the persons represented are: his second wife, Lady Elizabeth Mansel Phillipps and two of his daughters: Maria Phillips Walcot and her son Owen Walcot, and Kate Phillips Fenwick, her husband John and their son Thomas Fitzroy Fenwick. The collection also includes: group photographs of his servants at Middle Hill; his long-time personal servant, George Holloway; unidentified childlren (possibly his grandchildren), and a few friends. Photographic processes represented include daguerreotypes (some taken by Richard Beard and Antoine Claudet), ambrotypes and photographs. Almost all the daguerreotypes are housed in their original morocco cases, and some have been tinted by hand. The ambrotypes are in their original pinchbeck gilt frames, and some have been tinted by hand. A number of the ambrotypes and photographs have been annotated by Sir Thomas.
