James Edgar Pew (1870-1946) was the nephew of Joseph Newton Pew, Sr., founder of the Sun Company. He became involved in the oil business in 1901 when his uncle sent him to Texas shortly after the Spindletop strike. J. Edgar Pew immediately began to negotiate for leases.
