Diary, 1744 [photoprint].

The diary (May 17-June 15, 1744) was kept at "Stratford", Westmoreland County, Annapolis and North East, Md., Chester and Philadelphia, Pa., and on board the ship MARGARET. It contains copies of Governor Gooch's letter of commission dated May 3, 1744 and instructions to Lee and Beverley, as well as copies of letters from Lee and Beverley to Gooch, from Sir George Thomas to Thomas Lee, and Conrad Weiser to Richard Peters. The diary also makes mention of Gilbert Tennent (p. 48) and the Maryland General Assembly (pp. 8-9).

William Black was a planter and public official of Westmoreland County, Va. In 1744 he was appointed by Governor William Gooch to the post of secretary to William Beverley and Thomas Lee, commissioners appointed to work with the representatives of Pennsylvania and Maryland to negotiate with the Iroquois Nation about the lands west of the Allegheny Mountains.
