Military correspondence, 1871-1875.

These letters document the military affairs of the state and Governor Preston H. Leslie's role as commander-in-chief of the Kentucky militia. Included are records of an attempt by one Kentuckian to be compensated for property conscripted by the state militia during the Civil War; correspondence documenting the call up of the local militia in Nelson County to prevent a jail break; an inventory of the state arsenal in 1875; and lists of the enrolled militia of the city of Louisville.

Historical note: In 1860 the Kentucky Militia was replaced by the Kentucky State Guard. During the Civil War the State Guard suffered from the same divided loyalties which were indicative of Kentucky as a whole. It was reestablished in 1878, with the primary focus on controlling civil disturbances including feuds, riots, strikes, and lynchings. In 1912 the State Guard became the Kentucky National Guard. Historical note: In 1792 the Kentucky General Assembly established the Kentucky Militia. The act required that all white males between the ages of eighteen and forty-five be enrolled in the militia, form companies, and participate in several musters each year. These companies could be called to active duty by the governor in case of war, insurrection, or danger to public safety.
