Warren L. Hanna papers, 1671-1989 (bulk 1937-1983)

The Warren L. Hanna Papers contain materials related to Hanna's interest in the controversy surrounding the site of Sir Francis Drake's landing on the western coast of North America in 1579. The collection includes several drafts of Lost Harbor, Hanna's history of the controversy, as well as Hanna's extensive collection of Drake-related research materials (primarily articles, clippings, and pamphlets, and also including pages from a book published in 1671). The collection also comprises documents, primarily correspondence, on the controversy compiled by two other Drake researchers, Robert Heizer and Hart North. A moderate amount of Hanna's own Drake-related correspondence is present, as well as correspondence and minutes from Hanna's involvement in the Sir Francis Drake Commission. The collection also contains ephemera from events commemorating the Drake quadricentennial in 1979, and materials concerning the Drake Plate hoax. Oversize materials include printed and hand-drawn maps of Drake sites, a drawing of an anchor found in the 19th century and purported to belong to the Golden Hinde, and publicity posters for Drake quadricentennial events at the Oakland Museum.
