Spiritual railway, circa 1840.

"Spiritual railway" consists of two nineteenth century poems by the American poet J. Adams. Both poems bear the principal title, "The spiritual railway" while each has its own subtitle--one being called "The upward line," the other, "The downward line." "The upward line" can also be found appended to some editions of Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "The celestial railroad."
