This manuscript, dating ca. 1817, contains the alto part to approximately 49 psalm tunes. Each tune is titled and the meter of the text is indicated by the standard abbreviations of CM, LM, and SM. Notable pieces include Timothy Swan's "China" and William Billings' "Brookfield." Also bound in are two leaves from an unidentified, published text entitled, "Of Tuning and Forming the Voice." Based on the music, this book was probably used in a New England singing school.

Timothy Swan (1758-1842, composer and compiler of sacred tunes and secular music, was born in Worcester, Mass., and settled as a hatter in Northfield, Mass. Swan later began teaching music in Suffield, Conn., where he composed the greater part of his works and published The Songster's Assistant, 1800 and New England Harmony, 1801.
