Vada Horsch historical collection, 1915-1962.

In 1949 Vada Horsch was put in charge of a N.A.M. history project. As part of this effort she developed an historical collection documenting the positions that N.A.M. took on a wide variety of economic and political issues. These materials which include press releases, internal memoranda, reports, pamphlets, and photographs, document N.A.M.'s efforts to shape the relationship between business and the state. There are substantial files tracing N.A.M.'s opposition to organized labor. Position papers drafted by James Emery delineate N.A.M.'s role in the open shop movement of the 1920s and its vociferous opposition to Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. Files from the 1940s and 50s document the ways in which N.A.M. helped to shape the Taft-Hartley and Fair Labor Standards Acts, as well as U.S. policy towards the International Labour Organization. There is also substantial material on the AFL-CIO merger which was collected by Vada Horsch and her assistants.
