Rix family papers, 1849-1948.

Papers of Alfred Rix, judge and lawyer; his wife, Chastina; and their sons, Julian, an artist; and Edward, a businessman and inventor. Includes a diary kept by Alfred and Chastina from the time of their 1849 marriage in Peacham, Vt., through 1854 and the purchase of their home in San Francisco, Calif.; Chastina's travel diary from her 1853 voyage to San Francisco aboard the ships Ohio and Golden Gate, via Panama; copies of letters from Alfred and Chastina to family and friends back East; copies of letters from Julian and Edward to an aunt; materials pertaining to Edward, including his first marriage certificate (1878), photocopies of his obituaries, scrapbook pages containing clippings about Edward's University of California graduating class of 1877 and his patent for a vertical air compressor used in mining. Also includes a few miscellaneous items and typescript writings of Edward's daughter, Genevieve Rix Burrows, relating to her father and her grandparents.
