The collection consists of letters and documents (in Spanish and English) of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (1808-1890). The bulk of the materials in the collection cover the years 1844-1846, and there are about forty drafts of letters by Vallejo himself in the collection. Subject matter includes the defense of the northern frontier, relations with the missions, and the treatment of the Indians by Father Jesús María Vásquez del Mercado.
