Chiefly correspondence written during Gwin's terms of office as U.S. Senator. Includes a minority report (1849) from the committee responsible for planning the state constitution, recommending a preamble; a petition to Congress (1851) for the establishment of a branch of the U.S. Mint in San Francisco; an invitation (1850) to the California Democratic Union Club at Tammany Hall in New York City, for an event promoting immediate admission of Calif. as a State of the Union; and newspaper clippings of Gwin's obituary.
