Papers, 1896-1920.

Records, 1896-1920, of the association in one volume, including lists of officers, directors, and members for 1896-1897; minutes, 1896-1899, of the association, including resolutions proposed and enacted, mainly involving the insurance, assessments, and special assessments of the members; letters, outgoing, 1897-1908; and testimony, 1898, copied from the Anniston City Court, in Calhoun Co., Ala., on the preliminary trial of Dox McClelen and Joe Fate, 1899 Jan. 21, who were accused in the killing of James Mitchell. The testimony is quite detailed, occupying several pages, and witnesses were named. There is also a clipping, 1898, on the jury selection for that trial. The letters, unsigned, were copied, if not written, by B.G. McClelen., the association's secretary. Letters of particular interest include the 1908 June 2 letter about a local election between L.E. Watson and Mr. Montgomery for Calhoun Co. tax collector; the 1899 May 19 letter about the trail of Dox McClelen, in which the author believed the convicted Dox, a black, was innocent, as James Mitchell was the aggressor; the 1898 May 12 letter to G.W. Eichelberger asking him to run for Ala. state senator on the Populist ticket, and commenting on local Calhoun Co. politics (there are ten drafts of this letter); and the 1898 Mar. 28 letter to C.I. Thompson regarding Populist and Democratic candidates running for state and local offices. There is also a 1920 Sept. note mentioning the death of Dox McClelen.
