Samuel Irenæus Prime studied theology at Princeton and became a Presbyterian clergyman, but left the ministry after four years and moved to New York where he established The observer, a religious periodical. He wrote on a variety of subjects, including his European travels and a biography about Samuel F.B. Morse, but was best known for his "Irenaeus letters," published between 1880 and 1885. Wirt County was named for William Wirt, who gained fame in Virgtinia as a lawyer and perhaps is best known for his role in the prosecution of Aaron burr for treason. It was created in 1848 from sections of Wood and Jackson Counties. Wirt County was one of the fifty western Virginia counties to form the state of West Virginia in 1863.
