Hiram B. Tibbetts family papers, 1830-1857.

Letters primarily to John C. Tibbetts relate favorable planter-slave relations and other plantation and family news. Topics include the Christmas festivities and a wedding held in the slave quarters; the prevalence of cholera in East Carroll Parish, on Mississippi River steamboats, and in New Orleans; and the cotton economy of the Lake Providence area. A partial letter (ca. 1850) provides an analysis of the political situation in Louisiana and Mississippi immediately following the Compromise of 1850, states that Louisiana is not in favor of disunion, mentions Pierre Soule's efforts in defeating the "Omnibus Bill," and comments at length on the policy of disunionists in Mississippi.
