Two letters, one to "My dear Kernahan, " (probably Coulson Kernahan), from Undershaw, Hindhead, Haslemere, mentioning a meeting with a lady and Bishop; the other to "Dear Major Hammel, " from Windleshaw, Crowborough, Sussex, mentioning the 21st Division. Also includes 3 clippings about Sherlock Holmes, including the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, probably slipped into the book by the collector.

[John] Coulson Kernahan was born in Ilfracombe on August 1st 1858, third of the 8 children (3 sons and 5 daughters) of Rev Dr James and Comfort Kernahan, who were both born in Ireland. Coulson's father was a congregational minister in the West Country, Gloucester and St Albans and also wrote on religious and geological subjects.
