Eduard Bergner papers, 1926-1954.

Business papers pertaining to cases handled by Bergner, most of which concern the estate of Mark Hopkins, one of the investors in the Central Pacific Railroad; and a contest over the will of Frank G. Weber, a wealthy farmer of Broderick in Yolo County, Calif. Hopkins material consists chiefly of correspondence between Bergner and the law firms of Pillsbury, Madison, ? along with legal documents, a report giving Hopkins' family history and biography, and photocopies of documents and letters written by Hopkins. Weber material consists of correspondence (1950-1954) between Bergner and John F. Downey of Downey, Brand, Seymour, and Rohwer, attorneys in Sacramento; with related correspondence and reports concerned with Bergner's investigation of the Weber case, notes on witnesses and prospective jurors, and newspaper clippings. Other papers include correspondence and notes dealing with Bergner's investigation, on behalf of Alaskan salmon fisheries, of Haida Indian land and fishing rights in Alaska; and a typescript of Bergner's short story, Roses of Jericho, written under the pseudonym of Kurt Bergner.

John Florin Downey, who served as a drummer boy with the Union forces in the Civil war, came to the University of Minnesota as professor of mathematics in 1880, and was Dean of the College of Science, Literature, and the Arts from 1903 until his retirement in 1915.
