In 1985, John Dillard and others initiated a class-action suit on behalf of black Alabamians in Federal District Court in conjunction with the Alabama Democratic Conference (the black arm of the Alabama Democratic Party) and the NAACP charging that Crenshaw County and 159 other voting districts systematically violated the 1964 Voting Rights Act through their method of holding at-large elections. Dillard's efforts, which lasted until 1988, succeeded in forcing 160 counties, cities, and school boards throughout the state to adopt single member district elections rather than at-large elections. The collection contains all motions and counter-motions concerning both Dillard and the State (which defended the at-large electoral bodies), collateral attacks, news releases and clippings relative to the strategy and decisions of the courts in this landmark case.
