Statements by trial judge, 1919-1939.

"When any defendant, on conviction, is sentenced to imprisonment in the penitentiary for the term of five years of more, the presiding judge shall make, on forms to be provided by the board of pardons a statement in writing,..." which gives the case history. This statement "must be signed by the judge, and must, within thirty days thereafter, be transmitted by him to the governor, to be filed in the executive office." (Ala. Code, Chapter 219, Section 5322 [1923]). This series consists of the statements of the trial judge filed in accordance with this law. Information available on the statement includes the criminal's name, age, occupation, physical condition, address, indictment, conviction, name and comments of the judge, and the name and address of the defendant's attorney. Also found in the files is correspondence to the governor relating to the case of the criminal, documents certifying the number of criminal, civil and equity cases tried, and the number of cases remaining on the docket. These records were created under the Board of Pardons (1901-1935) and the Parole Bureau (1935-1939), and during the administrations of Governors Thomas Erby Kilby (1919-1923), William Woodward Brandon (1923-1927), Bibb Graves (1927-1931 and 1935-1939), Benjamin Meek Miller (1931-1935), and Frank M. Dixon (1939-1942).
