Apache Indian photograph collection, 1887-1893.

This collection documents the Apache Indians while at an Indian reservation in San Carlos, Arizona as well as when they were imprisioned at Mt. Vernon Barracks. Images include a military encampment at San Carlos, photographs of members of Company F, 9th U.S. Infantry, and Chappo, Geronimo's son. There is also a picture of Eskiminzin and members of his family. Photocopies of watercolors of Mt. Vernon Barracks are included.

George Briggs Russell was stationed at San Carlos Indian Reservation as a captain in the 9th U.S. Infantry. He was later promoted to major of the 5th U.S. Infantry and named Commandant of Mt. Vernon Barracks, Alabama. As a result, he dealt with the Apache of both, San Carlos and Mt. Vernon Barracks. The San Carlos photographs were taken by D. A.
