Public information pamphlets, 1919 [state publication].

This series contains publicity materials which were used in the campaign for funds for a memorial which would commemorate the part of Alabama and Alabamians in World War I. The Commission was authorized to solicit contributions and to canvass throughout the state. A circular lists the members of the Commission, the campaign officers, the creating act, and a Commission resolution about the design of the memorial. A pamphlet by W.S. Stallings, State Campaign Director, describes the history of the "Alabama Memorial" in the context of other states and enlarges its function to include preserving records, histories, and valuable articles of the state. A flyer lists the amount of minimum quotas and the number of men who entered the service, by name of county. A campaign handbook contains suggested material for speakers, with copies of newspaper editorials, excerpts from Governors' messages, book extracts, poems, quotations, and essays. (One editorial states that the Memorial will house the Department of Archives and History and the Department of Education.). A description of the state's war record includes the work of the State Council of Defense, the Woman's Division, and other war activities, including a list of amounts paid to various taxes, bonds, and funds in 1918. An itemized table provides the number of inductees and registrants by race, county, and major city in the selective draft. The suggested programs for schools in 1919 May 9 and Nov. 11 (Armistice Day), contain poems, excerpts, creeds, and songs.
