The Chenango Twenty Townships, known also as Governor's Purchase or Clinton's Purchase, was acquired by the State from the Oneidas in 1788 and patented to individuals between 1792 and 1794. The surveyor, Waterman Mathewson, the son of Noah Mathewson, came to New Berlin, New York from Rhode Island about 1800.
