Norman Norell, born Norman David Levinson, was often called the "Dean of American fashion". Born Roy Halston Frowick in Des Moines, Iowa, Halston began his career in millinery and made his mark with his design for the pillbox hat worn by Jacqueline Kennedy at her husband's inauguration.
