Translations from the Norwegian of three letters (1869) by Hjelm-Hansen describing his visit to the Red River Valley, originally printed in the Nordisk Folkebladet (Minneapolis, July 31 and Aug. 11 and 19); a subscription list and prospectus (1877) for Over Land og Hav, a newspaper he published; a letter (1880) from the Northern Pacific Railroad land commissioner concerning the promotion in Norway and Sweden of its lands in the Northwest; and miscellaneous cards and papers pertaining to Norwegian-American press publications.

Paul Hjelm-Hansen, author and journalist, was born in Bergen, Norway, and died in Goodhue County, Minnesota. He came to the U.S. in 1867, and in 1869 was appointed agent of the Minnesota State Board of Immigration. He visited the Red River Valley that summer, and his letters about it in the Norwegian-American press apparently helped stimulate emigration to western Minnesota and the Dakotas.
