Letters (largely on microfilm), diary (original, and typescript and microfilm copies), and miscellaneous papers of McLaren, largely documenting his service with the Sixth Minnesota Infantry in the Dakota Conflict (1862) and on the Sully Expedition that followed the retreating Indians into Dakota (1863-1864).

Fisk was born in New York of Irish extraction, the eldest of six sons of John B. and Jerusha T. Fisk. He worked as a "raftsman, farmer, carriage maker, and newspaperman" for the Daily Courier of Lafayette, Indiana. Four of his five brothers also became newspapermen. Andrew Johnson (b. December 29, 1808, Raleigh, North Carolina-d. July 31, 1875, Carter's Station, Tennessee) became the seventeenth president of the United States after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
