William and John B. Willis papers, 1808-1815.

William Willis' military papers consist of a letter (1813) reporting the number of men drafted for Willis' command and a general order (broadside) by Governor William C. C. Claiborne for continuation of an auxiliary militia force to protect Louisiana. Personal letters, a broadside (1815) listing resolutions passed by the Concordia Police Jury and a bill for an advertisement comprise the remainder of the papers. Of note is a letter to William from Gab Winter providing an eye-witness account of the Battle of New Orleans.

William Willis was a colonel in the Louisiana Militia during the War of 1812 and later a Concordia Parish sheriff. His brother, John B. William C. C. Claiborne practiced law in Tennessee and became judge of the Superior Court of Tennessee in 1796. He became governor of the Territory of Mississippi in 1801 and was appointed to receive Louisiana from France in 1803. He served as governor of the Territory of Orleans, 1803-1812, and as governor of the State of Louisiana, 1812-1816. From the description of William C.C.
