Civilian contracts comprise mainly those for construction and equipping of lighthouse tenders and Coast Guard vessels, naval air stations, helium production plants, public buildings and monuments, and repairs to waterways; rental or purchase of special machinery and scientific equipment; and granting grazing and water rights on public lands by the Department of the Interior. Military contracts consist chiefly of those for design and construction of lighter- and heavier-than-air craft and roads and railroads, development of a coastal defense system, leases of land on military reservations, and research on explosives. These contracts and indexes are part of a larger series of contracts dating from 1894.
