John Galen Howard papers, 1873-1954 (bulk 1888-1931).

Contains correspondence, diaries, drafts and manuscripts of poems, transcripts of speeches, articles, and course lectures, relating to Howard's career as an architect, a professor, and a poet. The collection spans the years from 1874 to 1954, and provides a look at Howard's personal and family life, and interests outside of architecture as well as his architecture. The bulk of the collection consists of personal papers, including biographical and genealogical information; diaries; correspondence with friends and family, among Howard family members, and particularly between Howard and his wife, Mary; and, poems. Howard's professional and faculty papers include writings, lectures, and correspondence from his work at the University of California both as university architect and professor. Also includes papers of his wife, Mary Robertson Bradbury Howard, chiefly family correspondence, as well as travel narratives and diaries written by Mary before their marriage.

A leader in the American Renaissance Movement, with special interest in the Beaux-Arts style, John Galen Howard came to California in 1892-1893. He was chosen to execute the Hearst plan for the University of California, Berkeley, and later founded the School of Architecture at Berkeley. Howard's own buildings on the Berkeley campus exhibit the range of materials and styles taught at the School. He also had an active practice in San Francisco.
