The Department of Public Health functions to administer programs to protect the health of the public of Alabama. Among the many duties of this department are inspections, notices of warning when outbreaks of disease occur, and other functions. These annual reports document the activities of the department over the years. In the early years the annual reports contained reports from each county health officer. Among the items documented in these reports are health laws, sanitation, disease and diseases (such as AIDS, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, tuberculosis, yellow fever), drainage, evnironment, and water supply, inspection of almshouses and convict camps, including mines, as well as reports on births, deaths, morbidity and mortality, and other issues. Of particular interest is the documentation concerning epidemics, such as the yellow fever epidemic of 1873, the small pox epidemic of 1883, and many others.
