Collection, 1860-1946.

Collection, 1860-1946, of genealogical materials, letters, and clippings. The genealogical materials center on James L. Pugh, and include a biographical sketch of him in the letter, 1944 Nov. 8, from Joel D. Jones, in Dixon's Mill, Marengo Co., Ala., to Mrs. W.M. Caskey, in Forsyth, Ga. There is also material related to the Pugh and Tillman families in Ga. and Ala. The letters, 1884 Dec. 6 - 1903 Oct. 10, include two letters to Pugh, and one letter from Pugh, arranged chronologically. The first letter, 1884 Dec. 6, is from R.E. Morgan, in Holyoke, Mass., to Pugh, in Eufaula, Barbour Co., Ala. In it Morgan discusses genealogical information about the Pugh family, especially his mother, Rachel Pugh. The second letter, 1906 Jan. 19, is from Pugh to his daughter, Laura Theresa, the wife of Alfred W. Cochran, regarding his bout with the disease shingles (herpes zoster) and the treatment he was taking for it. The third letter is from Henderson M. Somerville, in Washington, D.C., to Pugh, in Eufaula. In it Somerville discussed his pending dismissal by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt from his position with the New York General Appraiser's office apparently for his critical view of Roosevelt's attitude toward southern blacks, and requesting Pugh to ascertain whether that criticism was the primary cause for his pending dismissal. Newspaper clippings are enclosed with the letter. Clippings, 1860-1910, one of which is a letter to the editor by Pugh, including the 1860 Dec. 5 typed transcript of his letter reprinted in the Montgomery Daily Mail regarding his views on secession; at least two of which are letters to the editor by Alpheus Baker supporting Pugh in the 1870's, other letters to the editor supporting Pugh; and many articles when Pugh died in 1907, including the New York Times, the Atlanta Constitution, the New Orleans Times Democrat, the Mobile Register, the Memphis Commercial Appeal, the Birmingham Ledger (Ala.), and many others, on 1907 Mar. 9-16.
