Biographical sketches, clippings, reminiscences, and letters, mainly on Shields's career as a Mexican War and Civil War army officer; founder of Shieldsville (1855) and proprietor of Faribault, both in Minnesota; promoter of Irish immigration to Minnesota; and U.S. senator from Illinois (1849-1855), Minnesota (1858-1859), and Missouri (1879). Also described are a quarrel with Abraham Lincoln (1842) and the unveiling of a statue of Shields in the Minnesota Capitol (1914).
