Elliot Evans research files on William S. Jewett, 1845-1967 (bulk circa 1942-1967).

The collection consists of the research files of scholar and curator Elliot Evans on California portrait painter William S. Jewett. Included are files of correspondence between Evans and a range of other scholars, curators, and Jewett relations on Jewett's biography, family history, life experiences, and work; drafts of articles written by Evans; a small amount of published material on Jewett; Works Progress Administration transcriptions of Jewett's letters from 1849-1871; an original deed and lease of Jewett's for land in San Francisco dating to 1857 and 1869 respectively; notes on exhibitions of Jewett's paintings; and photographs, mainly of Jewett's paintings (though there is one small portrait of Jewett dating to circa 1870). Most of the photographs are interfiled with the research correspondence. Some of the correspondence files are general research correspondence on Jewett. Many, however, are files on individual paintings, exhibitions, or family members. The files of correspondence on Jewett's relationship with New York artist C.S. Gaylord include five early letters (1845-1846) from Gaylord to artist Jasper F. Cropsey, some of which mention Jewett and his work.
