James Lick Trust records, 1889-1922 (bulk 1889-1891).

Primarily legal papers from the files of Samuel W. Holladay, attorney for California Academy of Sciences, pertaining to the litigation between Richard S. Floyd and other Lick trustees, and the directors of several institutions that received bequests from Lick's estate. Also listed as defendants were California Academy of Sciences, Society of California Pioneers, California School of Mechanical Arts, and the regents of the University of California. Other organizations benefiting from Lick's bequest include Lick Observatory, Protestant Orphan Asylum of San Francisco, and Ladies Protection and Relief Society. Includes printed and manuscript copies of legal papers and drafts of documents prepared by Holladay; financial statements concerning the acounts of the Lick Trust; and legal papers from the related suit of R.S. Floyd and other trustees vs. Ira P. Rankin, other directors of institutions that received monies from the trust, and the institutions themselves.
