Legal matters administrative files, 1930-1979.

The records document litigation and legal matters connected with the operation of Consumers' Research. Included are correspondence, briefs, newspaper and magazine clippings, contracts, incorporation papers and by-laws, and workers compensation, fire, and automobile insurance materials. Also included is correspondence with Consumers' Research counsels William Consodine, Dorothy Kenyon, Oscar Cox, and others. Subjects include CR's confidential restrictions, copyright law, Isaac Goldman Printing Company vs. Consumers' Research, CR's right to criticize products, tax status, and trademarks including CR's dispute with Consumers Union over format in 1957. Also included are extensive files on CR's attempts to avoid paying unemployment insurance in several cases, including that of Alice Evans and the New Jersey Unemployment Insurance Commission vs. CR. This includes materials relating to the operation of CR. Some of CR's correspondence with William Consodine contains materials relating to CR's suspicion of communists working for the United States government during the Second World War.
