Government general files--National Recovery Administration, 1930-1958 (bulk 1933-1934).

The records document Consumers' Research's interest in the National Recovery Administration (NRA) and its effect on consumers, business, labor, and politics in the United States. The records also cover Consumers' Research's contention that the NRA was ineffective because it failed to protect the interests of the consumer and that the NRA's Consumer Advisory Board lacked the authority to act on behalf of the consumer. This lack of authority led Consumers' Research to call for the establishment of a Department of the Consumer with cabinet status. Included are correspondence, newspaper and magazine clippings, publications, papers, speeches, and codes. Subjects include prices; industry codes; canned food standards; economic and legal theory behind the NRA; business attitudes; NRA personnel and publicity; General Hugh Johnson; a "new" NRA; the Consumers Advisory Board; NRA consumer conferences; fascist tendencies of the NRA; call for standards and grades in labeling of products; and Senate opponents of NRA.
