Adams' diary opens as he worked for John W. Ayres, a cabinetmaker, on the renovation of the Loring-Emmerton house in Salem, MA. Its owner, George Emmerton, and Emmerton's architect, Arthur Little, visited as work progressed. After completing this commission, Adams traveled to Providence, RI, where he undertook projects for various firms, including Morlock and Bayer, the Providence Coal Company, Peabody's and Sons, and Potter and Company.
