John W. Dwinelle papers, 1825-1936.

Scattered personal and business correspondence (1825-1879); an appointment book (1873); two scrapbooks of newspaper articles written by Dwinelle, covering his travels in Europe and the American South and West (1849-1870); a scrapbook of clippings concerning the water supply issue in San Francisco (1877); and papers of the lawyer and real estate developer William W. Chipman, which Dwinelle acquired after his marriage to Chipman's widow, Caroline. Chipman papers include typewritten excerpts from diaries (1850, 1863-1864) kept by Chipman, letters, original and typewritten copies of the land acquisition (1852) for Alameda by Chipman and Gideon Aughinbaugh, and surveys (1851-1852, 1874) of the Encinal San Antonio. Also includes papers (1931-1936) relating to the donation of the Dwinelle collection by Chipman's sons to various institutions.
