H.L. Hurlbut family correspondence : ALS and typed transcripts, 1852 Feb. 24-1865 Sept. 21.

Consists of 22 letters, 12 of which are written by H.L. Hurlbut to his wife, Emmaline during the years 1852-1853. His letters describe his voyage from Vermont to San Francisco via Panama aboard various steamships, including the Georgia, the Ohio, and the Old Isthmus; discuss mining conditions and earnings in El Dorado County, Calif.; and inquire after his sons at home. The remaining letters consist of correspondence to and from various family members, discussing their activities. Includes several letters from Duane, as well as a letter from William McGowan notifying Hurlbut of his brother Ruben's suicide.

Hiram L. Hurlbut and his eldest son, Duane, left their home in Grand Isle, Lake Champlain, Vermont, for the Calif. gold fields in 1852. They lived at Coloma, where they bought shares in several gold mines. In Dec. 1852, Hurlbut's brother, Ruben, and his wife, joined them in Calif. Hiram returned to Vermont in 1853.
