It was held in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of Beckman Instruments, Inc.; the eighty-fifth birthday of Arnold O. Beckman; and the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Rockefeller University hospital. A book was published in 1986 which included the proceedings of the symposium.
